Form 11 Deadline 2026: What Every Irish Self-Assessed Taxpayer Needs to Know

20th August 2026

Are you self-employed? Do you serve as a company director? Do you earn income outside PAYE? Then the Form 11 deadline matters to you. The 2026 filing season is approaching fast. Filing late doesn’t just look messy — it costs real money.

This guide covers the key dates, who must file, and how to dodge the usual penalties.

Key Form 11 deadlines for 2026

Two deadlines apply, depending on how you file and pay:

  • 31 October 2026 — the standard deadline for paper filers. You must also pay any balance of 2025 tax and your 2026 preliminary tax by this date.
  • 18 November 2026 — the extended deadline for ROS users. You must file and pay through the Revenue Online Service (ROS) to qualify. Paying by cheque or bank transfer doesn’t count, even if it arrives on time.

Prefer to let Revenue work out your bill? File a paper return by 31 August, and Revenue will calculate your liability for you. That takes some of the guesswork out of self-assessment.

Who needs to file a Form 11

Form 11 isn’t just for the self-employed. You generally need to file one if you:

  • Run a business as a sole trader or partner
  • Serve as a proprietary director (you own more than 15% of a company’s shares)
  • Earn rental, investment, or foreign income
  • Receive any income that isn’t fully taxed through PAYE

Only have a PAYE salary with nothing extra? You probably don’t need to file. Not sure either way? Check with Revenue or your accountant. Filing when you don’t need to — or skipping a filing you do need — both create unnecessary hassle.

Don’t forget preliminary tax

You must also pay preliminary tax for 2026 by the same deadline, alongside your 2025 balance. To avoid interest charges, pay the higher of two figures: 90% of your actual 2026 liability, or 100% of last year’s bill. Most people simply use last year’s figure, since it’s easier to calculate in advance.

What happens if you miss the deadline

Missing the deadline triggers an automatic surcharge on your tax bill:

  • 5% of the tax due (capped at €12,695) if you file within two months of the deadline
  • 10% of the tax due (capped at €63,485) if you file more than two months late

Skipping the self-assessment section brings a separate €250 penalty. Interest also builds up on any unpaid tax until you clear it.

How to get ahead of it

A little preparation now avoids a scramble in October. Start these tasks in the coming weeks:

  • Gather your 2025 income records: business accounts, rental statements, dividend or foreign income documentation
  • Register for ROS now if you haven’t already — account activation can take a few days
  • Estimate your 2026 preliminary tax using your 2025 liability
  • Decide whether you’ll file yourself or hire an accountant, and reach out early rather than in late October
